The Shaker

Annie turned 5 two weeks ago (HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!) and Emery will be 3 in two short months (Again: HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!).  It has been a joy watching their relationship grow and develop.  If you remember, Annie was not fond of having a baby sister.  To this day if we ask her if she would like to have another baby, she has a very firm "NO" for an answer! (now now, there are no babies happening around here!).  Anyways: my girls have had to navigate, as all siblings do, how to be siblings.  How to share, how to be caring, how to be kind and considerate, how to handle one another when each gets annoying, how to be compassionate when one gets hurt, the whole nine.

They finally play together, have conversations with each other that involve more than, "give that back! no thats mine!" and they are slowly learning to love each other - and to show it!!

From time to time Emery uses different levels of step stools and builds "stairs" up onto the ottoman we have in front of our couch.

Earlier she had the pink one pushed back a little and was sitting on the white one.  She leaned back too far, fell backwards, and hit her back on the edge of the pink one.  She of course, started crying because it really did hurt.  I scooped her up and grabbed that purple pillow (her favorite thing in the world) and snuggled her.  As she was trying to calm down she cried out to Annie, "Annie!! I need the shaker!!!!!!"  and Annie immediately ran to her room to find it.

You see, last week Annie built something for Emery called "the shaker."  It is her own little creation and is like a rattle - only its made out of legos.  Annie made it just for Emery and said, "anytime Emery gets sad, she can just shake this and it will make her feel better."  The inside of the upper part is hollow and its filled with tiny little pieces, so when you shake it - it rattles.

So: Annie ran to grab the shaker, and with a smile on her face she shook and shook and Emery, within seconds said, "Oh thanks Annie. Im all better now!!"  Despite mama snuggles and back rubs, the thing that made her better was this little Lego shaker that her sister made.  Once she was ok, she crawled out of my lap and they sat together while Annie shook the shaker a little longer to make sure her sister was feeling better.

I hope they always love each other like this.
