Making stinks
There is SO much catching up I need to do on Emery for the sake of this blog, but I will start with what is happening in our world right now: potty training!!
Emery has a very... wild... personality! You never have to guess what she's feeling or thinking. She wears her feelings all over her face be it mad, sad, excited, happy, grumpy, etc... You can just look at her and know exactly how she feels. She is dramatic, over the top, and just down right FUN. I say this all the time, but it has been a while since we've talked about her - but I feel like she does give me a run for my money. She was a hard baby (or maybe I was just losing it during her babyhood, which is to be debated) - and she is a very opinionated toddler, but my heavens: the kid is a BLAST! She is so so so funny. My mama told me the other day I need to get back on track with writing these - because Im shorting her on memories!
Steven and I were sure that it would be a near-impossible nightmare potty training Emery just because of her personality. The girl is smart, but she stands her ground when it comes to what she wants. Seasoned mothers have always said "when they're ready, they're ready.... and not a moment sooner." Now that Im on to my second child who is nearly fully trained, I believe this whole heartedly. One of my best friends posted the other day about "at what age do you start potty training your kiddo..." and I found myself thinking, "Ah, she's a first timer...." Ive done this once before and I tried forcing it and it was a nightmare, but when #1 was ready, she never even wore a pull up to bed. It was 100% done in one flip of a switch in her mind. But again: child #2 is TOTALLY different, so I honestly wasnt sure what to expect here.
Em turned 2 in January, which makes her 2yrs 4mos currently. I resolved in my mind that I wouldnt even use the words "potty train" until she started showing very very clear signs and was ready for that one day switch flipping. It was really stressful trying to force kid #1 to use the potty - and when they're actually ready, its just way easier. Annie was 2.6 when she flipped the switch, so I expected Em to be 2.6+ when hers flipped, but surprisingly, it has happened sooner.
For a while Emery has been able to tell us when she needs to poop. Well, after she has done the dirty work she will come tell us that she stinks. About a week ago it got to where she would tell us *just* before she actually did the deed, at which point we raced her to the potty and she made her stinks there. One day I just had a "mama gut" that said "put her in panties for today." I had no expectation - I just figured since we were home, we'd give it a shot. By the end of the day she had used the potty every time. I did have to remind her to go pee and take her, but she stayed dry. We did that for a few days, and in my mind I really hadn't committed to potty training her. She just had panties on during the day..... we weren't actually doing this.
But then after a few days she started telling me that she needed to pee pee. And she'd run her chubby little legs to the bathroom - and go! Fast forward a week and i can take her out in public in panties (though Im still slightly fearful and sometimes take her in a pullup because I am still not convinced this is all happening). At church yesterday she wore a pullup, and she went potty for her teachers. So: somehow.... this has happened and Im not even sure how!
Now, we haven't gotten into night training, mainly because (1) Im not even sure how to go about that since it just happened with Annie.... I assume the same will hold true with Em and (2) there is no way im going in her room in the middle of the night and waking her up and that's the only way i can think to do it. I have resolved that it will just... come in time as she gets older and more capable of pulling her own breeches down. I will say: she woke up 100% dry this morning and the first words out of her mouth when she woke were " I need to PEE PEE!!!!!!" She also woke up dry from her nap today and told me she needed to potty shortly after waking.... So: maybe its happening...???
So: somehow my 2.4 year old is potty trained.
The part I actually wanted to share: is how hilarious she has been during this process, if you can even call it a process....
Pooping on the potty is her favorite. She gets SO SO SO excited when she makes stinks. The cutest things have been:
(1) Im convinced Annie has a super sniffer, just like Gus on Psych. She cannot process the smell of anything foul, so when she makes stinks, she uses one hand to hold on to the pot, and one hand to stick her fingers up her nose to plug them. It makes me laugh so hard because she WILL NOT take her fingers out, no matter what the cost. ((I just got some poopouri in the mail today, so we are excited to try that!)) - anyways.... Emery has gotten to where she will mimic this - ands stick her fingers in her nose when she goes. So funny.
(2) Cute Poop: She made teeny turds once and kept saying, "Awwww!!! Mama!!! Those stinks are so cute!!!!! I love them!!! look! They're swimming! See how cute they are mama?!"
(3) Sausage poop. When they come out looking like sausage links she gets SO EXCITED and exclaims: "Mama!!!! I made sausage!!!!! (I credit the secret life of pets and the sausage factory for this one...) I have sausage poops!!!!!"
The kid is a hoot you guys!!
In conclusion: when your kids are ready to potty train, they'll be ready. Don't stress about it mama. They wont wear diapers forever.... hopefully! The biggest tip I have for you is: get a potty for your car! It takes all the stress out of being out with a kid in undies. We never have to worry about finding a potty or being without one. I can literally stop the car at any given moment and let Emery pee - even if its on the side of the road. Before we go into a store, I let her sit on our potty in the car and go - that way we dont have to use gross restrooms either! It really is genius and takes a lot of stress off of you!
