Annie's 1st Birthday Party
We celebrated Annie's big day on October 19th at our house! My mom, sister, and nephew came from Arkansas to spend the weekend - and Steven's mom, dad, and sister Jennifer came too!
Preparing for the party was a lot more work than I thought it would be! My mom and I baked the cupcakes and assembled the fruit kabobs on Friday. Saturday we just needed to throw the meatballs in the crockpot, wrap the baby pig n blankets, and ice the cupcakes. Doesn't sound like too much work... except it was!! I forgot a little about the decorating part.. and we made the icing ourselves... which took time (we made lime cupcakes with cherry icing, and chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter icing). And we decided to do a cake last minute for Annie (white cake with plain buttercream icing). Top it off there were 8 people at my house while we were trying to get everything together (who all had to eat at some point before the party in the midst of our chaos). I cannot tell you how stressed out I was as the clock hit 2:30 and the kitchen was still a disaster and cupcakes still needed icing. Oh... and did I forget to mention... that our birthday girl was sick. (At this point we weren't 100% sure what was wrong with her - she had a fever (day 2) that wasn't breaking and her nose was a snotty mess.) She was overwhelmed by all of our guests AND she felt terrible. So add a crying baby into the mix of trying to prepare for the party... and WHEW.
BUT. We pulled it off thanks to the help of the moms and dad!! I don't really feel like I got to enjoy much of the party because I was stressed out and my baby was a mess, but it was so nice having all of our friends here to celebrate with us! Some sweet friends let us borrow their bounce house and even though Annie felt terrible, she really loved it (as long as daddy was holding her hands). It was nice to see a glimmer of sunshine in her little eyes! She ended up needing a nap in the middle of her party, so I had to retreat and feed her and lay her down, which took me away from our guests as well. It took her a little while to settle down and get comfortable enough to rest. Once she went to sleep I was able to visit a little with our friends. Since she was asleep... Steven and I had to open her gifts, which was kind of fun :) Once almost everyone had left she woke up and we let her get down in the floor and check things out. She still felt bad so she cried at all the toys that made any sort of noise. Now that shes feeling better she is really enjoying her new things!
We weren't able to do her cake during party time because of her nap & because she was being really weird about food and texture. We saved the cake part until the next day. She dug into it a little bit but ended up crying. We gave her a little sampling of the cake (which is her first sugar experience), and she ended up spitting it out and throwing a fit. So while it wasn't a happy moment, it's totally ok by me that she didn't actually eat any cake :)
We definitely did not expect our one year old girl to get a double ear infection for her birthday... so this was not how we envisioned her first birthday. However, we were very pleased with how everything turned out and are so grateful for the friends and family who came to our home to celebrate with us!
Happy 1st Birthday Annie!!
