Dairy Free is No Way to Be

When Annie was about 4 weeks old, she started crying.. a lot.  When my mom and aunt came to visit, they helped us discover that she was having some major gas pains.  After some research and a little exploration, we figured out that Annie was extremely sensitive to dairy.  I cut all forms of dairy out of my diet and within two days we noticed a great improvement.  After a week, even better, and after two weeks, our perfect baby was back.  (It takes dairy about two weeks to clear your system).

I have not had any form of dairy (with the exception of butter, because that didn't seem to bother her) since Thanksgiving.  No milk.  No cheese.  No ice cream.  No pizza.  No cheesecake. No dairy. At all.

Based on my readings and some testimonials from close friends - it seems that most babies can tolerate dairy at about 6 months, once their digestive systems mature.  Not Annie.  Dairy still tore her little tummy up.  We tried again at 7 months and again, she couldn't handle it.  I started thinking that maybe we'd have a little lactose intolerant princess on our hands.

However, over the last two weeks (or more) Steven has been sneaking tiny amounts of cheese into my breakfast burritos.  We haven't noticed any discomfort in the girl, so then I tried a little half and half with my coffee.  Nothing.  Little by little we have upped my dairy intake and I am very, very, very excited to say.... that Annie can now tolerate it!!!

After 7 months of no dairy - I can finally have it again!!!!!  I can't tell you how much easier life will be now that I don't have to tiptoe around recipes and search for dinners that don't contain dairy.   And I'm most excited about pizza.  I have been craving pizza for MONTHS.  We have done homemade pizza a few times without cheese, and while it's close... its just not the same.

And the next time Steven and I go on a date... he is going to take me to a pizza buffet..... and I have promised to show him something special.  Me. Pizza. and Breastfeeding.  The perfect team.
