Thank You, Pinterest
This may very well be the most brilliant post I've ever come across on Pinterest. And maybe it's just because of the phase of life I'm in right now. Why is it that every time I realize I'm hungry... it's in the middle of some chaotic moment in my home. My baby daughter is demanding my attention... or I'm on my way out the door... which then forces me to "convenient food." Something I can grab or prepare with ease... cereal, granola bars (chocolate chip, of course), pb&j.... that sort of thing. I prepare better meals for my husband and my baby than I do for myself. I have noticed that vegetables or fruits typically require a little bit of cooking/prep work, and so I continue to gravitate towards easy foods... which are usually carb loaded.
So, I found this idea on Pinterest... and as I've mentioned, it's brilliant. I struggled with the waste involved in this... because of the baggies, but then I decided if $2 every two weeks to a month will help me eat better and keep me healthy, I'm game.
The idea is that you make yourself snack baggies. Buy a box of snack sized zip lock baggies... and make some snacks! I bought some veggies and fruits and set aside about 20 minutes to clean, prep, and cut everything... and now I have a week or two worth of snacks that I can just grab and go! If I'm walking out the door.. boom. Grab a bag. If my daughter wants me to play in the floor with her... I can grab a bag and play and eat! There's no prep work or thought.. just open the refrigerator drawer - and there they are. Pick something. Anything. And if I need to give Steven an extra snack or two for his lunch - boom. Healthy options.
My snacks include: tiny tomatoes, bell peppers, sugar snap peas, carrots, blue berries, strawberries, honey dew melon, and then I have some wheat thins in my pantry in little baggies. You can do cheeses, but since i am still dairy-free, that's off the table for now.
