Cloth Diapering: FAQs

I should have titled this post "QPAM" - Questions people ask me.  These may not be the most frequently asked questions, but they are some that people have asked me...

1. You say you're saving money because you aren't purchasing diapers every month. Aren't you spending just as much money by the time you factor in the cost for using extra water and special detergent for washing them?
No!  Our water bill is only $2 month more than it was before we started cloth diapering (when Annie was 4 weeks old).  This increase not only includes diapers, but extra laundry from having an extra person with her own clothes... and who pukes all over ours.   AND as far as detergent goes, we were given some Rockin Green detergent for a gift.  This particular detergent costs about $15/bag and lasts 45/90 loads.  This bag should last us another two or three months. Once we run out of this type of detergent I may switch to Tide Free (which is approved for cloth diaper use) because it is half of the price and should last 4-5 months.  So I project that in the course of ... lets say a year, I'll spend $31/yr on diapering vs. $480 (assuming you pay $40/mo for diapers). Yes please.

2. What size clothes do you have to get to accommodate such a fluffy bum?
While it is true that cloth diapering makes your little one have a fluffier bottom than they would in a disposable, there really isn't that much of a difference in clothes.  Annie was able to wear her newborn clothes until about 5-6 weeks, at which point we moved her to 0-3.  She is now 14 weeks (a little over three months) and is ready to move into 3-6mo clothes because (1) they are too short and (2) the elastic is too tight on her waist.  They still accommodate the fluffy tushy perfectly!  So, you would just buy normal sized clothing!
