Yes, We are Cloth Diapering!

Steven and I decided even prior to us getting pregnant that we wanted to cloth diaper our babies.  Why you ask?  Well, lots of reasons... namely to save money.  Sure they're great for the environment, "green" and all of that... but we were looking at our dollar signs.  Yes they are an investment up front, but the good news is:  you can use them with all of your children!  You buy diapers once... and then have them for every kid.  We want around 4 kids... and will never have to buy diapers again.  That's exciting.  AND actually, with all of the generous gifts we've received from our friends and family, we have only spent about $60 of our own money getting our stash.  We were able to use gift cards to purchase the rest!

There are a thousand different types of cloth diapers - lets just say they have come a loooooong way since our parent's day and age.  There are tons of brands, lots of different types, qualities, etc... Purchasing has been the hardest part!  Luckily we have lots of friends who cloth diaper ... who have diapered multiple children, so we were able to tap into their resources to know what to buy!  Some diapers are crazy expensive (all-in-ones, for example are like $20 per diaper and are only good for one use, thus defeating the purpose of money saving).  We decided that the cheapest route were covers and inserts.  You use a flat or prefold... put it in a cover (which is waterproof)... and tah dah!  If baby pees, you just change the middle and can reuse the cover again and again.  If baby poops... well, you may need to change the whole thing.

We decided to try flats instead of prefolds due to a friend's recommendation.  From what she says, they are cheaper (true), work as well as a prefold, dry faster, and are less bulky.  We haven't actually put this thing into practice yet since our baby girl is still 7.5 weeks away from arrival, but she has diapered 2 babies... and is a cloth diapering consultant...so we trust her.  (You should check out her blog:  Diaper Parties by Deidre)!  You can buy nice quality flats for about $19/dozen.  And for our covers, we wanted cheap but effective. We heard tons of good things about Flip covers (*Thanks Angie Karge!*) (around $13 per cover... but we were able to catch them on a BOGO sale, so they were even less than that) and Thirsties covers ($12/cover - we purchased some of these with gift cards) - so those are the main things that we purchased. (Econobum covers were also recommended).  We do have a few odd and end diapers that we've collected, but the majority of our stash consists of those!

There will be a lot to learn about cloth diapering once our little princess arrives, but for now we feel like we have a good handle on this thing and feel adequately prepared.  I will post lost more about the process for those of you who are dying to know how we hold up with the stank. haha!  For now, here is our diapering stash:
