The Doctor Hunt
We have been here in MO for a little over 2 weeks... and I have YET to find a doctor! The good news is: I'm getting close!
My neighbor recommended an OBGYN to me and she raved and raved about her! I thought this would be the winner... until. I called to schedule an appointment with her and got the worst news ever: In the practice, when you're pregnant, you cannot schedule with a specific doctor. Throughout your pregnancy you have to see every OB on staff..(which means a different doctor for every appointment).and then when it comes time to deliver the baby - whoever happens to be on call with resume the role of my doctor.
I called the Women's Clinic at the hospital 2 miles from my house - same story.
Perhaps this is a normal practice in a large city... but it is one that I am having a really difficult time coping with. The majority of OBGYN offices operate like this here. How can a doctor possibly get to know you well enough to know what you want and all of that... when they rarely see you. AND "whoever happens to be on call will deliver your baby." Hm. Comforting. Not.
SOooo i kept searching.
I found a birthing center only 20 minutes away that will give me the option to deliver at home - or there at the center - naturally, no drugs (they dont even offer them.) I would see the same midwife and possibly her assistant for every prenatal visit. When it comes time for me to deliver, they will both either (1) meet me at the birthing center or (2) come to my house - whichever option I prefer. My office visits will last about an hour long, which allows time for the actual visit, and for them to get to know me, what I want, and to teach me a little bit about natural birth. This option excites me the most... but the bad news is: they are out of network for my insurance...
I went ahead and interviewed with them yesterday just to find out more info about them... and they took down my insurance information. They are going to see what kind of coverage I can get if I choose this option. I should know by the beginning of next week!
In addition to that, they also recommended some great midwives at a hospital 25 minutes from my house (a hospital I have never heard of) and a few doctors who would be great for natural birth in the event that it doesnt work out for me to use the birthing center. I checked out midwives at the two hospitals above ... but neither of them offer that type of service. There are two hospitals further south (25-30 mins) who both have midwife practices. All of the people they recommended are in network for my insurance.
SO... even if the birthing center option doesnt work out... I at least have some options :) I am feeling hopeful!
