Quitting Stupid, Cold Turkey Style

My sweet husband sent me an email yesterday with the subject line "Quitting Stupid, Cold Turkey Style." (Yes, our week has been INSANE and so we've reverted to email to communicate!) We have been discussing lots of life changes - things that we just need to better ourselves at and stop (or start) doing. Areas that we feel we are not being good stewards in. We truly want to glorify God in our lives and we both feel like there are three areas that we are lacking in. We need to make changes in these areas of our lives, but we haven't because we are simply being stupid (defined: foolishness, senselessness). And so we have decided to quit being stupid - cold turkey style.

Area One: SUGAR I have read countless articles on how awful refined sugar is for you! I was going to make a large list in this post of all the reasons why it is bad... but it was simply too long, so I decided against it. If you want to know why it is so bad... just google "why refined sugar is bad for you" and you'll be reading for days.

So, today is DAY 1 of no processed/refined sugar.

NOTE: I didn't say "no sugar." I get smarty pants remarks sometimes like, "well, there's sugar in fruit" but that is a different form/type of sugar. It's natural. Honey, Agave nectar, brown rice syrup, sucanat.... all forms of ok sugars.

It is typically a pretty easy thing for us during the week because we don't eat bad things. I cook a healthy dinner (which makes for a healthy lunch the next day), and so forth and so on. I don't buy junk food, so it is not at my house. However, I did discover that my favorite spaghetti sauce contains bad sugar, so I will have to reevaluate that - along with other everyday items that I have in my fridge/cabinets, including cereal. The tricky part will come at social gatherings (which occur OFTEN). And in sweet things when we get a craving.

There are lots of things that I will have to learn about cooking with natural sweeteners and finding healthy alternatives, but I am completely up to the task!! It helps that we have some great friends who are treading through this as well, so we can share resources!

We are both so excited about taking a step and being obedient in this small (but very large) area of our lives... So here's to DAY ONE!

  1. Hooray! You can do it. Clean eating is the best way to eat. I also had to cut back on caffeine because it triggered sugar cravings for me.
