Here Goes Nothing

I am officially NOT taking birth control anymore!! I am really excited - and really nervous at the same time.

I have been on it since I was 18. At the time I was having abnormal cycles, which ultimately lead to ZERO menstrual cycles in 11 months. I went to the doctor - was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome - and have been on BC every since. Fast forward 7 years... and I'm still on it.

Ive been reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" which describes how to use the FAM (Fertility Awareness Method) for birth control, pregnancy achievement, and reproductive health... and I have to say that I am digging it!! This method uses charting your waking temperature and other natural signs your body gives you to determine when ovulation occurs. Now.. most people crack the joke "You know what you call people who use Natural Family Planning?...PARENTS" - but this method is slightly different. Of course risks are always involved... but Im ok with that!!

So Ive decided to give this a whirl! Not to mention I will get to get rid of the drugs in my system (which I absolutely HATe) and hopefully get a handle on what my body does by default!! This will also be extremely helpful next year when we start trying for a baby!

There are concerns though with me having PCOS. Doing this will help me to see whether or not Im ovulating, which will again be very helpful next year! There is a chance that I'll end up on BC again (7 years ago I was not having menstrual cycles at all... no cycles = no good. BC forces them)... but at least I'll feel better knowing what my body does by default... without the help of drugs.

So... here goes nothing!! (eek!)

  1. Exciting! I think you've made a great decision, esp with having PCOS. It will be good to see what you're body is doing without the artificial hormones. And I love that you included the joke...and I'm able to laugh at it b/c Lib was a result of the natural method. But she was also the best thing that has ever happened to us, even though her timing wasn't exactly convenient. Ya'll will be great parents! Have fun getting ready (and practicing ;)

  2. Thanks Kristie!! Yes, we are super excited! My mom got really excited when I told her that I was officially not taking it anymore. She had a "ooh you're gonna get pregnant" tone in her voice. haha! I mean, if it happens, its ok with us. We'll be GOLDEN anytime after November - but if it happens before that, then we're ok with it :)
