Memorial Day Weekend
Steven and I enjoyed a MUCH needed getaway over Memorial Day Weekend! Things have been
beyond crazy for us - and we spent months trying to figure out where we should go. We have our DR trip coming up - so we didnt want to go anywhere too expensive, but we really needed to get away.
My husband has a... CRAZY passion for aviation. I cannot even express to you how much he enjoys it - everything about it!! He is starting school in August to work towards a career as an Aviation Maintenance Technician! (I am so incredibly proud of him!) As we were talking about this one night the idea hit me - an AIR SHOW would be perfect!!! Not only would he enjoy this beyond measure - but it would get him even more pumped up about school!! So the next day I researched "Air Shows" nearby and found one on Memorial Day weekend!! Not the greatest time to attend one of these b/c of the crowd - but we both had three free days off... so neither of us would have to request a day! So I decided to go for it & I booked our hotel! Later that I day I shared my surprise with him & I thought he was going to have a heart attack!
So Friday after work we set out to JONES BEACH, NEW YORK! (Jones Beach is on Long Island). We missed a turn and ended up in DOWNTOWN NYC 11pm on a Friday night. Talk about crazy!! This was the first time either of us had been to NYC - and here we are in downtown on a Friday... wow. We were both stressed beyond measure because the traffic was insane! We moved through it well, but it was still crazy! I have never in my life seen anything like it - there were cars EVERYWHERE. At 11pm!! People were all over the place, cabs were whipping in and out, parked cars were all over ..... we now know why we see so many people calling for cabs in the movies. Its almost impossible to drive a car through there. It wasnt bad for us b/c we were passing through - but man!! I cannot imagine what NYC looks like at 5pm on a Monday... nor do I ever want to find out. We were so amazed at the city life and blown away by how hopping it was so late at night. It really is the city that never sleeps! We have never been more excited to have a GPS - Im not sure we would have navigated through the crazy streets without it!! It was stressful, but in the end we were so excited to have taken that wrong turn!!
We had an amazing weekend at the beach - that was so crowded on Sunday they stopped allowing people in b/c it reached capacity. I wont even begin to go into the details of this... but I have decided that the crowded beach scene is not for us. Way too many half nakeds for us!!
Steven and I both really enjoyed the show - it was so awesome to see the US Navy Blue Angels fly 4 planes only 18 inches apart. Talent!
On the way home we took the scenic route and drove through downtown Manhattan - which was not nearly as bad as NYC on a Friday night. At one point we were driving through a construction area & I pulled out the map and discovered that construction area = GROUND ZERO!! We didnt get to spend a lot of time there since we were just passing through... but words cannot express how awesome it was to be there on Memorial Day. To see it in person. Almost 9 years later and it's still a mess... wow....
We also got to see the Brooklyn Bridge & the Statue of Liberty while we were driving through...
Later in the day we ended up in Philly - which was cool - and by the time we got home we had driven through SIX states!!
It was an amazing weekend and I am so thankful to have had the best travel mate EVER. I love my husband so much & am so thrilled to have gotten to spend 3 uninterrupted days with him!! Oh - and after this trip I have officially been deemed the best wife ever!
