Our feet in His hands

“Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love” – John 13:1

Jesus washes his disciples feet. Not that big of a deal, right? To some of us maybe it is… to people who have some weird disturbance over feet – who cringe at the site of them…I’m sure this would have been a big deal. However, to most of us, so what. To the disciples, however, this was huge. I’ve been to the Dominican – where kids don’t wear shoes – and their little feet are CAKED with dirt and mud (see the photo I took above). Can you imagine what the disciples feet were like? 12 men who may or may not have worn sandals… gross. This was a HUGE act of servanthood on Jesus’ part. He tells them in John, ‘If I do not wash your feet, you are not my people.”

Max Lucado explains, Jesus did not say, ‘If you don’t wash your feet.’ Why not? Because we cannot. We cannot cleanse our own filth. We cannot remove our own sin. Our feet must be in his hands.” He goes on, “He will was the grimiest part of your life. If you let him. The water of the Servant comes only when we confess that we are dirty. Only when we confess that we are caked with filth, that we have walked forbidden trails and followed the wrong paths… we will never be cleansed until we confess that we are dirty. We will never be pure until we admit that we are filthy.”

“If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)"
