Where Does My Help Come From?

It amazes me how often we try to do things on our own, in our own power, by our own strength. Jesus tells us in John that apart from Him we can do nothing. He says it himself. If that is the case, why do we keep trying? Why do think that we are the exception to the rule - that for some reason it doesn't apply to us? I'm sure we don't say to ourselves, "Jesus said I can't do anything without him... I'll show Him alright!" We don't say that - but we do it, don't we? Over and over again our actions scream that. We think we can handle it, we think we have everything under control. We think we have enough life experience to cope or deal with whatever it is we're facing. The truth of the matter is... we don't. It doesn't matter how great of a handle we think we have on things or how much life experience we have - we cannot do anything on our own. Left to ourselves... we would destroy ourselves and everyone around us, wouldn't we? I know I would. I am a very selfish person by default and it is only by the grace of God that I am what I am. If I did not have Jesus... well, I want to say I have no idea where I'd be, but that isn't true at all. I know exactly where I would be - and it is not a good place. The crazy thing about it is...We have help!! We have help that is readily available!! Help that chose us long before we chose Him... help that will give us whatever we ask for in His name! That's the thing though - we have to ask. Asking is not always so easy... the idea is easy, but the action is not. Asking for help requires that we get out of the way. If you ask someone to help you write a letter... you have to allow them access to the letter you're writing, right? You can't cover it up or keep it all to yourself. Asking for help requires opening up and moving over. It's not easy to lay ourselves down and get out of the way... but oh the joy and peace that comes when we do.

God has shown me this truth today - that He is always there to help! He is readily available... I just have to lay myself down and ask for His help! There is victory in Jesus...I can't do anything on my own!

"I lift up my eyes to the hills—

where does my help come from?

My help comes from the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—

he who watches over you will not slumber;

indeed, he who watches over Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD watches over you—

the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

the sun will not harm you by day,

nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all harm—

he will watch over your life;

the LORD will watch over your coming and going

both now and forevermore"

-Psalm 121
