Being Teachable
I was thinking today about all of the people I know who are unteachable. You know those people - those who think they know absolutely everything about absolutely everything. Those people who don't need any advice or any input from anyone on anything - because they already know it all. There is nothing further they can learn - they consider themselves to have "arrived." You know, they've reached that point where they have attained all the wisdom that they can, therefore they don't need to know anything else. They've arrived.
I am reading a little more for my small group - about getting help from our friends. It says in the book that successful people (that is: people who are where you want to be) do not attribute their "success" to their IQ's. They attribute it to the collective wisdom and insight that they've gotten from others. It says "successful people aren't successful because they knew everything they needed to know. They are successful because they were willing to apply the lessons they learned from others." These people know their limits - they know when they are going beyond their area of expertise and are not afraid to ask for help from people more successful (again, successful is being used in the sense of - a person who is where you want to be). Position does not equal ability. Just because I am a child of God does not mean that I know all there is to know about being a child of God. Being married doesn't mean I know everything about being married. Successful people know when they are in over their heads...
King Solomon was the wisest man to ever live, yet he encouraged people to seek wisdom and direction from others. The wisest man who ever lived... who didn't NEED any counsel at all.. told us that wise people will hear and increase in learning and should acquire wise counsel (Prov 1:5)
"Through insolence comes nothing but strife, but wisdom is with those who receive counsel." - Prov. 13:10
I never want to be that person who is unteachable. I want to be the person who knows when I'm in over my head - when I've run out of smarts or have reached my limit... the end of my knowledge. God uses the counsel of others sometimes to direct us - and I want to always take advantage of that - to use that when I have no idea what to do in a given circumstance or situation. There are many things that I do not know and there are many wise people in my life that do know things that I do not. You can't grow if you aren't teachable. You can't learn more if you won't listen. I never want to reach the point where I think that I have "arrived." I want to continue to grow more and more towards holiness and godliness. Our Heavenly Father never meant for us to be satisfied with where we are in our walk with Him. I don't ever want my pride to get in the way!!
"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel." - Prov 12:15

Oh Ashley you are so right! If we become unteachable we stop growing in the LORD. God showed me something that I blogged about and your blog so encouraged my Spirit.
ReplyDeleteI so love and miss you!
